Granite

Granite is an incredibly hard and durable stone.

It is formed from the solidification of magma deep below the Earth's surface, resulting in beautiful crystalline structures that give the stone an unparalleled dimension.

This slow and natural process of reheating and cooling over millions of years makes every piece of granite completely unique in its colour, texture and pattern, adding astonishing natural beauty to the home.

Granite is incredibly scratch-resistant, can withstand extremely high temperatures and is nearly impermeable to water. This makes it an exceptionally good stone for high traffic areas of the household, such as kitchen counters, hallways and living rooms.

We can give the granite of your choice a personalised finish. Honed, polished or antiqued finishes will add further style to your designs. Granite can also be professionally sealed to make it impervious to water, making it an excellent choice for bathroom vanities as well.

Granite offers the two-fold advantage of being extraordinarily beautiful whilst being extremely hygienic, practical and robust.

Marble

Marble is an undeniably beautiful stone.

Its characteristic veins and patterns are produced when sedimentary carbonate rocks undergo inconstant metamorphosis due to extreme heat, creating variable recrystallisations of the original carbonate mineral grains.

These natural variations produce stones with exquisitely unique designs that have been used to decorate luxurious homes for millennia.

Marble is soft, porous and water-resistant, making it perfect for bathrooms and wet rooms. It is also extremely dense, making it both a beautiful and practical option for flooring. This stone is often used for cladding bathrooms from floor to ceiling, drenching the walls, shower and vanity tops with a continuous pattern for an opulent look. Marble is also excellent for statement areas of the home, such as a hearth or fireplace, which will showcase the stunning natural beauty of the stone.

Marble is not as impermeable to scratches and stains as granite, so it is harder to maintain in a kitchen. Man-made quartz, porcelain or ceramic, manufactured with a marble effect, are commonly used alternatives for this. These engineered stones are incredibly durable and resistant. However, with the correct care instructions and dedication it its maintenance, some denser marbles can make for striking kitchen countertops.

Quartzstone

Engineered quartz is extremely resilient.

This semi-artificial stone is made by compressing ~90% ground natural quartz crystals with high concentrations of resin and polymers to enhance the stone's durability and resilience.

Furthermore, the engineering process incorporates a variety of pigments to create a extraordinary range of beautiful quartzstone slabs with unique colours and designs.

Quartzstone is commonly viewed as a more hard-wearing, more affordable, and more manageable alternative to marble. Its enhanced resilience makes it resistant to scratches, dents and cracks. This means that quartzstone is incredibly hygienic as there are no abrasions in which bacteria can culture unlike plastic counters. It is also non-porous. This means it is unable to absorb liquid making it stain-resistant. Both these properties makes quartzstone is an excellent choice for long-lasting countertops for busy homes.

Limestone

Limestone has been used in architecture for centuries.

It is a sedimentary rock formed in warm, shallow marine environments where calcium-rich skeletal remains have accumulated for millennia.

This gives the rocks their characteristic dusky, natural hues and commonly have visible fossils residing in them.

Limestone is beautiful, durable and incredibly versatile. Its soft and natural tones make it an excellent addition to all areas of the home, and it is incredibly hard-wearing, perfect for flooring. It is also a natural thermal conductor, so it is the perfect tile to place over underfloor heating.

Limestone is highly resistant to moulds and bacteria, hence the time-honoured tradition of using it in bathrooms and outdoor areas. Like marble, denser limestones can add astonishing beauty to your kitchen countertops as long as it is maintained correctly. However, for busy kitchens with children, we commonly recommend an impermeable granite or man-made quartz for ease.

Limestone is one of the natural stones that look better with age, as wear simply adds to the character of the stone rather than detracting from it. Therefore, for indoor and outdoor flooring or busy bathrooms, limestone is a luxurious and astute choice.

Alternative stones

At StoneShop, we like to work with suppliers that can also provide less traditional stone types to meet all your design ideas.

From natural rocks like slates, terracottas and sandstones, to man-made rocks such as porcelains or ceramics, the options to find the perfect stone style are endless.

Like quartz, these alternative, man-made materials are extremely durable, hygienic and come in an astonishing range of designs. Ceramics and porcelains are excellent for high-traffic areas such as kitchen counters, hallways and tabletops. Unlike quartz however, these stones have the added advantage of being incredibly weather-waring for outdoor areas, withstanding extreme damp and frost. This make them perfect for patios, pool sides or surfaces of outdoor kitchens.

We can also source an extensive range of natural stones. Slates tiles are beautiful additions to the inside or outside of any home and sandstone is an excellent material for outdoor cladding. We encourage you to explore the incredible array of stones out there before deciding the best fit for you. We will be happy to advise on the suitability of a choice and always welcome exciting projects with unique stone choices.
