Limestone is a type of rock made up mostly of calcite, a mineral form of calcium carbonate. Most limestone is grey but it can come in all sorts of colours from white to black. It is typically formed over many years at the bottom of oceans or lakes from the accumulation of shells, bones and other calcium rich goods
Limestone makes an excellent building stone because it can be carved easily. It can be highly polished and is considered a marble by most people but technically, if there are still shells visible or the structure is not crystalline, it is still a limestone.
Slate is a fine grained rock that can be easily split in to thin durable sheets. It consists of mainly grains of mica and quartz plus smaller amounts of chlorite, hematite and other minerals.
These samples are just a few of the many types available. All natural stone varies in colour, pictures are examples only.
